If you were not aware of the Robotics Challenge that occurred in 2015 here is a great chance to catch up on some of the machines that were built.
The grand challenge brought about a huge amount of robotics technology. Particularly in legged robots like bipeds. The point of the competition was to create robots that could be used in a nuclear plant disaster or similar accident. But of course, much of the hardware and software will quickly leak into commercial applications.
JPL - RoboSimian
RoboSimian was one of the rare entrants to the Robotics Challenge that was not bipedal.
Carnegie Mellon - Chimp
Korea - Hubo
Boston Dynamics - Atlas
